Abstract
The failure modes of a microprocessor based system experiencing an EMC susceptibility include the possibility of a system crash, requiring a reset in order to restore normal operation. This mode of failure could have serious consequences if the system is employed in a safety critical application, such as anti-lock brakes on a motor vehicle. The failure modes are one characteristic of microprocessor based systems which warrant special consideration when designing for EMC. Another is the ability to use software techniques to detect and correct corruptions in data. These special characteristics are considered along with design techniques for good EMC performance, in terms of both emissions and immunity, which are applicable to a wider variety of circuits and systems
