Abstract
The authors describe how electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) was designed into a sophisticated microprocessor-controlled synchronous transmission multiplexer and how, even after meeting radiated emission and susceptibility standards, internal interference problems associated with the microprocessor can still occur. They describe the type of digital transmission equipment involved and the steps taken to make it compliant with the relevant standards, and conclude that good software design is just as important as good hardware design in achieving a product capable of satisfying EMC and interference specifications
