Abstract
The use of motion compensation in video coders is becoming widespread, particularly with the introduction of the new CCITT Recommendation H.261 for videophone codecs, which incorporates motion compensation. The paper describes a technique for tracking the outline of an object. The process involves computing the motion of the outline vertices from frame to frame. The technique is being applied in an interframe predictive coding system, using the vectors produced to predict the position of the object in the following frame. The errors caused by edge inaccuracies are then `mopped up´ by comparing the predicted version of the next frame with the real version. Data reduction is achieved by using only the motion vectors and the pixel corrections to describe the following frame. The simulation is coded in C language on a 10 MHz 80286 based personal computer
