Quality of service evaluation of VoIP over HSDPA

In this paper we investigate the characteristics of the Voice over IP service deployed over 3G mobile network HSDPA. The necessary protocols for Voice over IP may provide controlled delivery of multimedia traffic over Internet and wireless technologies. We evaluate the VoIP service using a simulator that models the HSDPA system. Results are manifested in terms of packet loss rate, delay and delay jitter, which are important performance measures to guarantee QoS. Moreover, the VoIP performance depends on the system capacity and radio access channel configurations. The understanding of how the VoIP service behaves under different system configurations is given in terms of offered traffic load and wireless channel error probability.
