Abstract
The threat posed by computer misuse can be countered by security measures and legal measures. Legal deterrences (in the form of relevant legislation) are relatively low-cost but their effectiveness depends on many factors (such as good drafting and successful prosecutions) which cannot be predicted accurately in the short term. The paper discusses legal issues arising from hacking and computer viruses, together with the Computer Misuse Act 1990
