  • Abstract
The author looks at optical switching system aspects with respect to typical third layer applications requiring compatibility with the general network and stand-alone type applications. On the device level, he describes four different ways of handling polarization: by making the devices polarization independent; polarization control; polarization diversity; and single polarization devices by polarization control in the external network
