Abstract
The Mayaguez Campus of the University of Puerto Rico implemented a wireless network. The purpose of this network was to bring the campus resources closer to the students. Several things were taken into consideration during the development of this project; including the areas to be covered, network design, system management, security and costs. A collection of open source applications were used to develop an authentication and monitor server. An open source firewall was also implemented. The network has over 3000 registered users and still growing. The next step will include the extension of the network to the student’s dorm areas around the campus.
