Abstract
The feasibility of applying expert system methodologies to power engineering control design problems is addressed. First, the general concept of artificial intelligence (AI) implementation of design problem-solving techniques and the particular requirements for application to power engineering are discussed. Next, two expert systems, developed by the authors, are described: an expert system for the design of power plant auxiliary electrical systems, ASDEP, and an expert system for the design of secure power systems with respect to voltage control, VOCES. The purpose of ASDEP and VOCES is to show that knowledge-based systems, assisted by traditional algorithmic programs, are feasible for design problems in power engineering
