Abstract :
The similarity between expert systems as the bandwagon of the early 1980s and hypertext as the new one will surely, with the power of hindsight, be obvious to the technological historian. Hypertext is more hype than hyper and it is likely that if it follows expert systems, then vast resources, both human and financial, will be squandered and that there will be little return in terms of useful, commercially viable systems. It is a great temptation to merely suggest that there are no theoretical underpinnings to hypertext. However, two separate strands discernible, are given by the author
