The UK´s first fleet of three phase drive multiple units will be delivered to British Rail (BR) in 1991/92. The author discusses some relevant technological achievements, and describes the prototype development programme which is the keystone upon which BR´s confidence in the railway supply industry´s ability to successfully master the new technology has been built
