Abstract
This paper presents an algorithm that improves the coverage of an initial radio network by adding new base stations, taking traffic information into account. These base stations are placed in a non-uniform way, according to the uncovered surfaces in the network and the multi-service non-uniform traffic distribution. Some results regarding the automatic placement of base stations were obtained for different scenarios in Lisbon, both with and without an initial UMTS-FDD network. For the case with an initial network, one sees that the network performance is improved, e.g., for a 128 kbps/vehicular scenario, since the uncovered traffic and uncovered area decrease (the uncovered traffic from 11.7 to 7.4 %, and the uncovered area from 28.1 to 21.4 %). Besides, each new placed sector processes 210 MB/h that were not covered yet in the initial network, compared to each initial sector processing on average 543 MB/h
