Abstract :
The author presents systematic design steps leading to the fabrication and testing of practical microstrip arrays operating at the Ku-band. The following specifications are considered: frequency: 15.0 GHz; performance bandwidth: 500 MHz; gain: 13 dB; polarization: right-handed circular; 3 dB beamwidth: approx. 50 degrees ; axial ratio: 1 dB; sidelobe level: better than -10 dB; and disposition: modular subarray configuration. Several four-element arrays have been fabricated and tested. Preliminary results show that by placing one or two layers of filter screens (arrays of suitable patches) the axial ratio performance could be favorably modified and the gain, sidelobe level, and bandwidth could simultaneously be improved.<>
