Abstract
Adjustable speed drives for applications in the transportation industry are significantly different and face economic and cost pressures exceeding those of other industries. This and a companion paper constitute a summary of the present status of adjustable speed drives in the automotive, utility, and aerospace industries, including relevant topics of research and development. Specific topics in part I include the application of ASD´s in hybrid electric vehicles and advanced technology vehicles that rely on x-by-wire technologies plus grid connected hybrids. In part II special treatment is given to hybrid vehicle R&D needs and aerospace propulsion needs. Particular emphasis has been given to automotive industry needs, specifically those related to environmental and performance, and how these constraints impact installation costs.
