Abstract
This article investigates an efficient procedure for delivering voice services across an MPLS backbone. Using the Optical Networks Research Lab (ONRL) testbed, we consider using multi-protocol label switching (MPLS) to route compressed voice packets over an MPLS label switched path (LSP). Voice packets are compressed /decompressed only at the ingress/egress routers. Results show that this approach can enhance both the bandwidth efficiency and the packet processing scalability. Moreover, when using the MPLS virtual private network (VPN), the approach can provide a secure and efficient end to end voice connection.
