Abstract
Advances in Schottky diode technology are reviewed. Milestones are identified in the pattern of introduction of new configurations of diodes. Their consequences are assessed on the design of two-diode subharmonically and fundamentally pumped balanced mixers. Noise-temperature performance data is reported for such mixers, above 100 GHz. It is shown that such two-diode mixers yield comparable performance and superior reliability, relative to the conventional whisker-contacted single-ended (one diode) mixers. In addition, it is shown that two-diode mixers yield, in effect, simpler MM-wave receiver structures compared to similar receivers with conventional single-ended mixers
