Abstract :
A next-generation broadband switching router system architecture design together with its analytical model for future multimedia-oriented Internet is proposed and analyzed in this paper. We take advantages of both the connection-oriented mode as one basic building module with its own time slot, such as an ATM switch, and the connectionless mode as the other with its own time slot, such as the traditional router, to shape the proposed generic broadband switching router system architecture. The characteristics of our architecture are internally nonblocking, provided with N dedicated input queues, and three different packet-processing and transmitting time slots, with one for entering the router, one for entering the ATM switch module insider the router, and the other for entering traditional router module inside the router. Considering different time slots, the throughput of our proposed generic broadband switching router architecture is much better than that of the currently available router
