Abstract :
A dynamic local mesh refinement algorithm is proposed to accelerate the speed of local mesh refinement for the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. The structure of interest is first meshed with a coarse global mesh; at each time step, the algorithm evaluates the energy level at some strategic locations in the structure and refines the mesh at these locations if the energy level is over a critical level. The performance of this new refinement method is tested with a 2D FDTD engine for TE mode and the results show obvious improvement in speed with negligible decrease in accuracy.
