Abstract :
Summary form only given. The political revolutions and crises which have overtaken the countries of Eastern Europe over the past three years have tended to dwarf the technical problems surrounding the management and operation of electrical power systems in those countries. The author addresses not only the technical difficulties facing the electricity supply industries in Eastern Europe brought about by economic and political change but also the problems arising from and the management of the cultural and institutional change which is necessary to improve the efficiency and to update the industry which must meet new challenges in the future. The author touches on the way which international aid is being channelled to improve the electricity supply industries and where emphasis is being placed on institutional change and plant refurbishment and replacement. To recent examples are described
