            Abstract : 
The multiport network model is extended to study the effect of mutual coupling on microstrip antennas covered with a dielectric layer. The modeling of mutual coupling between microstrip patches with cover layers was verified experimentally by measuring mod S/sub 21/ mod between two identical one-port rectangular patches for spacings of 1, 2, 3, 5, and 8 cm. Very good agreement between experiment and theory was achieved, verifying the modeling procedure.<>
