Abstract :
An automatic speech recognition system is being developed for a patient data management system (PDMS) in a pediatric intensive care unit (ICU). A number of bedside monitors are linked by a local area network to a personal computer for real-time acquisition of vital sign data and the graphical display of these trends. The PDMS also allows for the input of the fluid balance data, which is then processed by the system. An overview of the different speech recognition systems which provide speaker-dependent speech input are presented. A multimodal person-machine interface supporting data input and interaction by means of keyboard, mouse, or voice input is included. The integration of automatic speech recognition and the multimodal person-machine interface in the OS/2´s Presentation Manager environment is discussed
