Abstract
A new theoretical approach to modeling underwater acoustic propagation is described. Based on the radiation transport equation, this technique easily allows incorporation of scattering by rough surfaces and internal waves. It has been applied to the problem of surface duct propagation with special emphasis on modeling the scattering out of the duct by rough surfaces and random fluctuations resulting in below duct ensonification. Comparisons of theoretical results have been made with a set of experimental data reported by Pedersen and Gordon and also with certain SUDS-I runs.
