Abstract :
The helical antenna operating in the axial mode is used as a circularly polarized radiator with a wide bandwidth. The author reports the possibilities of enhancing the power gain with the helix axial length unchanged and without any parasitic element. The design is based on the combination of the traveling wave, surface wave, and lens focusing principles. Although designed initially for INMARSAT systems, the antennas considered are also suitable for emerging MSAT fixed terminal applications. The antennas, which can handle temperature extremes of -70 to +80 degrees C, are rated for input powers of at least 150 W.<>
