Abstract :
The finite-difference-time-domain (FDTD) numerical technique is used to compute the dispersion characteristics of an H-shaped optical waveguide. The results are found to lie between the characteristics of a waveguide with a core-section surrounded by air and those of a waveguide with the same core-section that is surrounded by a cladding material. To verify that the FDTD method used here yields reliable results for mode dispersion characteristics of optical waveguides, the procedure outlined here is applied to examples of square waveguides that have been analyzed before. Numerical results are presented.<>
