Abstract :
During the past decade there have been a number of physical and environmental factors that have attracted the interest of the marine community, governments, and the public in general. These factors include concern for the increased size of ships (which now range up to 500,000 deadweight tons), the cargoes they carry, and the speed at which they travel. The increase in worldwide shipping and associated higher traffic densities heightens speculation about the ability to assess danger and to avoid ship collisions.
