Abstract
The prediction of forces on submerged pipelines requires the knowledge of the lift and drag coefficients and the characteristics of the nearbottom fluid flow. The Boundary Layer Measurement System (BLMS) was built and deployed to measure nearbottom boundary layer currents in support of the American Gas Association´s pipeline research program. Data gathered with the BLMS will be used to validate mathematical models of the seafloor boundary layer. The system can also be used to measure soil transport currents. This paper describes the design, development, and deployment of the BLMS.
