Abstract :
Not so many years ago, the transition from research output to products carried or necessitated few constraints other than technical function and thus was born the blurring of the edges and the confusion between research and design. The author works around the proposition that in modern day terms, engineering and engineering research is a valid, vital and necessary input to what is termed the `totality of design´. Examples are given of products emerging from such research. The author examines the direction and re-direction of engineering research emanating from rigorous product design/process interaction and triggered by this process. It is to the effectiveness and efficiency of this process that the paper is devoted
