Abstract :
Discusses a novel optical power meter which does not require access to the end of the fibre but instead measures power through the fibre coating. Typically the devices may be used either as a commissioning tool during installation or as a maintenance aid for fault location. A further improvement in measurement accuracy could be gained by reducing the size of the fibre specification `box´. This will result in a more consistent standard of fibre and a reduction in the spread of bend losses across the `box´
