Abstract
In Japan, infrared beacons are used for two-way communication between the road and vehicles as a key part of the infrastructure of the UTMS (Universal Traffic Management Systems), which is a new traffic management system. Previous infrared beacons were planned to be able to handle a maximum speed of 70 km/h. By contrast the infrared beacon for urban express ways (hereafter called the express way infrared beacon) was planned for vehicles that travel at the high speed of 100 km/h. A feature of this express way infrared beacon is that the OBU (on-board unit) that is currently in wide use can be used without modification. This paper gives an overview of the express way infrared beacon and discusses experiments with actual vehicle travel
