Abstract
The equidistance line claimed by Canada is applicable only in the northern corner of the Gulf where it produces a fair and equitable result; it should not be applicable in the central and outer area of the Gulf because of the prevailing circumstances relating to the concave/convex configuration of the coasts. The mid-channel line claimed by the United States may also not be justified because it lacks in reasons as well as precedents. A fair and equitable boundary would be an ocean ward straight line, starting from a certain terminus of the fair and equitable equidistance line, perpendicular to the general direction of the southeastern coasts of New England and Nova Scotia, which would divide the area cf the major interests in. accordance with the criterion of a reasonable degree cf proportionality between the lengths of the coasts and the area concerned.
