Abstract
Presents the advantages of microwave fibre-optic links over conventional microwave transmission media and the reasons for choosing the external modulation scheme. The authors also demonstrate such a link with a frequency response to beyond 20 GHz and insertion loss of 65 dB which agrees well with theory. Taking realistic target values for key parameters has indicated that a reduction of the insertion loss of the microwave fibre-optic link to 23 dB is feasible
