Abstract :
The authors propose a satellite LAN (local area network) interconnecting architecture which makes full use of satellite benefits and counteracts satellite demerits. The architecture provides high-quality data transmission and high performance for satellite bit errors by using a connection-oriented satellite protocol which can establish multiple logical links between two nodes. As a protocol conversion method, router-type interconnection was selected to guard against problems such as broadcast `storms´. Based on this architecture, a satellite LAN interconnecting system which includes a 3.6 m antenna with a 2 W transceiver, a satellite modem, and the new Satellite Node Processor has been developed. The system can support high-speed transmission rates of up to 768 kb/s and superior network management
