Abstract :
A single bus transfer error can cause a system crash or test failure, and with test execution times of the order of minutes for very complex test subjects, such an event is significant in terms of time and cost. Ideally bus transfers should be carried out as fast as possible and with inbuilt data integrity. A clear case exists for remodelling the current IEEE-488 specification to increase the data highway from eight to sixteen bits, with data integrity being provided via a suitable error-correcting code system
