Abstract :
This paper briefly describes important operational and design characteristics of this new system. An introduction describes the "JSCG\´s history in oceanography and its impact on the design goals for the Ocean Sampling System (OSS). The design emphasizes reliability, maintainability, measurement repeat- ability/stability, and simple but flexible operability. The OSS utilizes a microprocessor-controlled, self-contained battery-operated submersible unit. This eliminates the need for heavy, bulky umbilical cables and winches required to support most previous precision CTD and STD systems.
