Abstract :
Compares theoretically two types of microstrip compatible decade bandwidth couplers. An n-section Kemp et al. (1983) type coupler and its even mode equivalent circuit are shown. A slight generalisation of Kemp´s concept has been made whereby a length of transmission line of characteristic impedance is inserted between the two couplers in the tandem so that unwanted direct coupling between the two couplers can be eliminated. It is possible to produce a 3±1 dB coupler by connecting in tandem two 8.34±1.25 dB couplers. If the 8.34 dB couplers are made multi-section, then very wide bandwidths can be achieved. This type of coupler is also illustrated
