Abstract
The fiber distributed data interface (FDDI) standard specifies a robust architecture consisting of four basic types of devices: dual attachment stations (DAS), single attachment stations (SAS), dual attachment concentrators (DAC), and single attachment concentrators (SAC). Many of the prominent issues that face both concentrator designers and their customer, the network designer, are discussed. The discussion is divided into four parts: (1) basic concentrator design, (2) concentrator options, (3) capabilities provided by concentrator options, and (4) utility of concentrator capabilities. It shows that the utility of the added capabilities will vary depending on the goals, objectives, and requirements of the particular installation
