Abstract
As the CCITT SGXVIII has decided on the asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) as the target technique to implement B-ISDN, it becomes necessary to study the impact of this technique on video coding. The following ATM issues affect video coding: standardisation, variable bit rate coding, cell loss, synchronisation, user selectable picture quality, and multiplexing of service components. An overview of these issues is given
