Abstract
The aims of the author´s presentation are to indicate how ultrasound data are at present utilised in medical scanning, as well as to overview the newer avenues that are being pursued in order to enhance the retrieval of additional, but latent, information from the ultrasound signals. Despite many points of similarity, there are often distinct differences in the way ultrasound can be applied and exploited in the clinical and non-destructive testing environments, and some of these are highlighted in the discussion
