Abstract :
Summary form only given. Wavelength conversion in wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) networks offers distributed network management and reduction in blocking rising from wavelength contentions. Transparent WDM networks can route signals of various formats and protocols, and facilitate network evolution with full interoperability. Wavelength conversion with simultaneous multichannel conversion capability can serve as building blocks for scalable and modular wavelength-interchanging-cross-connects. Wavelength conversion by difference-frequency generation uniquely offers strict transparency and simultaneous multichannel conversion without significant crosstalk. Polarization-independent simultaneous wavelength conversion of 17 channels has been recently demonstrated in AlGaAs waveguides. In this paper, we report on the successful bit-error-rate measurements from simultaneous wavelength conversion of two channels carrying 2.5-Gbit/s and 10-Gbit/s data signal.
