Abstract
In this paper the problem of power control is approached by a utilitarian methodology. We characterize the utility possibility set of a wireless CDMA network with utilities equal to pure Shannon capacities. This formally shows the inadequacy of such utility functions and proves the need for transmission penalties. We derive a necessary condition for Pareto optimality in case of arbitrary utility functions. We use this result to calculate suitable pricing mechanisms and propose a centralized gradient-based power control algorithm for such a network and present some simulation results.
