Abstract
Error control coding matched to the number of symbols of quaternary phase shift keying (QPSK) is considered in this paper. Short nonbinary codes with a set of 4 symbols are used in conjunction with QPSK for improved error performance. These 4-ary symbols match the number of phases used in communicating QPSK. The improved performance relative to uncoded QPSK is demonstrated in terms of equivalent bit error probability. Hard and soft decision decoding are considered
