Abstract :
At present, the Western Isles (Harris, Lewis, North and South Uist) operate as an isolated system, with electricity being provided by diesel generation and distributed at 33 kV and below. Zn order to make the system more economical a connection to Scotland has been built. The author describes a programmable logic controller (PLC) for cascade intertripping so that the Island system will not collapse should a fault occur. The PLC will ensure less frequent supply interruptions
