Abstract
A general description is given of the arsenic doped silica waveguides and their characteristics, followed by a description of the two steps-the fusion splicing technique used to splice standard system fibre to the special fibre and the losses measured; and the butt coupling losses expected between the special fibre and 2×2 μm ridge waveguides-to give an indication of the total predicted fibre-to-fibre loss
