This paper describes work in progress on the development of an environment for distributed opportunistic knowledge-based control of an assembly workcell. It describes a centralised blackboard based upon a modified form of the architecture of B. Hayes-Roth (1985), a relational and geometric modeller, and a message-based communication mechanism
