  • Abstract
As a developing trend, it is more and more common to apply GIS onto the expansion of urban spatial so that the analysis of urban spatial gets great promotion. This article presents a real example of Ezhou city of Hubei province about its urban spatial expansion in the past 70 years. With geographic information systems, the quantity characteristics of land-use variation around urban built-up areas are quantitatively analyzed for genealogy of orientation research. It concludes that the variation of Ezhou city´s spatial structure is forward-accelerating. In the spatial, the spatial expansion has different characteristics at different time. The city experienced the development mode from a single nucleus to the present poly-center ring-shape group structure. Finally, the spatial expansion of Ezhou city is explained scientifically and urban expansion measures are put forward. This provides a basis for decision-making on rational development and complete urban planning so as to realize sustainable development of urban socio-economic and ecological environment.
