Abstract
Mathematical methods for the analysis of the polarization properties of fluctuating radar targets are discussed. It is shown that a reflected wave can be represented formally as the sum of four noncoherent waves. This leads to the possibility of comparing any radar target to a spherical four-cornered figure on Poincare´s sphere. This figure is called the polarization portrait of the target (PPT). A polarization basis can be determined such that the PPT has a canonical form and the coherence matrix is simplified.<>
