Abstract
Covers some aspects inherent in planning for evolution from an asynchronous to a synchronous transmission bearer network. Major influences affecting the present day asynchronous transmission network are examined, the shortcomings highlighted and the driving forces examined. Technical and operational benefits of synchronous networks are anticipated that will be enjoyed by network planners. A possible family of equipment based on the synchronous digital hierarchy (SDH) is described, in terms of functionality and networking abilities. Aspects of SDH network design and an outline of possible SDH network structure is given showing the application of the SDH equipment described. A possible evolutionary path from an existing asynchronous network to an SDH Network is also described
