Abstract :
The authors take the viewpoint that ΣΔ modulation is a mapping in the mathematical sense. They describe the mapping in mathematical terms and find that it is a projection. An explicit formula is given for the set of all inputs which give rise to any given output pattern. The fact that the mapping is a projection suggests the existence of limit-cycles and the authors investigate these in both low-pass and bandpass modulators. They take this one step further with an examination of the related phenomenon of amplitude quantization in nonideal modulators
