Abstract :
This special session of the Oceans ´82 Conference has been designed to provide a forum for ocean scientists, industrialists, and government administrators to examine the implications of a newly discovered resource off the shores of the world´s continents, the massive, enriched polymetallic sulfide deposits. Long unanswered scientific questions are being answered, economic opportunities unfolded, and political administrative vistas opened. This special session represents the first opportunity for representatives of these three groups to interact and share the information, opportunities, and problems of the present and future of this new potential resource. It is anticipated that this will be the first of many yearly special sessions on the subject of Polymetallic Sulfides on the ocean floor.
