Abstract
We present an application of a switched antenna diversity to a conventional adaptive modulation system, derive its optimal antenna switching threshold for maximizing the average transmission bit rate and analyze its performance in terms of the spectral efficiency and outage probability. The performance analysis shows that the proposed scheme with two receiver antennas achieves an SNR gain of about 2 dB over the adaptive modulation scheme with a single antenna and suffers from a small SNR loss of 0.5 dB compared with the selection diversity based adaptive modulation system when the average number of bits per symbol is targeted to be 2
