Abstract :
Minicomputer and microcomputer systems, designed for specific oceanographical field experiments, have become commonplace. This paper will examine both the changes to these computer systems which are occuring due to developments in the computer sciences and also the tradeoffs which must be made in system design. Emphasis will be placed on the effects of these developments on other discipline scientists who utilize computer data acquisition systems in the field.
